Forces between electric charges in motion : Rutherford scattering , circular Keplerian orbits , action - at - a - distance and Newton ’ s third law in relativistic classical electrodynamics

چکیده
Standard formulae of classical electromagnetism for the forces between electric charges in motion derived from retarded potentials are compared with those obtained from a recently developed relativistic classical electrodynamic theory with an instantaneous inter-charge force. Problems discussed include small angle Ruther-ford scattering, Jackson's recent 'torque paradox' and circular Keplerian orbits. Results consistent with special relativity are obtained only with an instantaneous interaction. The impossiblity of stable circular motion with retarded fields in either classical electromagnetism or Newtonian gravitation is demonstrated.

Standard formulae of classical electromagnetism for the forces between electric charges in motion derived from retarded potentials are compared with those obtained using an instantaneous Coulomb force described by a 4-vector electromagnetic potential. Problems discussed include small angle Rutherford scattering, Jackson's recent 'torque paradox' and circular Keplerian orbits. Results consistent...

متن کاملRelativistic impulse dynamics.
Classical electrodynamics has some annoying rough edges. The self-energy of charges is infinite without a cutoff. The calculation of relativistic trajectories is difficult because of retardation and an average radiation reaction term. By reconceptuallizing electrodynamics in terms of exchanges of impulses rather than describing it by forces and potentials, we eliminate these problems. A fully r...
متن کاملInter-charge forces in relativistic classical electrodynamics: electromagnetic induction in different reference frames
The force due to electromagnetic induction on a test charge is calculated in different reference frames. The Faraday-Lenz Law and different formulae for the fields of a uniformly moving charge are used. The classical Heaviside formula for the electric field of a moving charge predicts that the inductive force vanishes in the frame in which the magnet is in motion and the test charge at rest. In...
متن کاملLongitudinal Electrodynamic Forces | and Their Possible Technological Applications
This thesis deals with the relatively unknown phenomena of longitudinal forces in conductors. A survey of relevant experiments is given. Amp ere electrodynamics, which has been proposed to account for the phenomena, is compared with a Maxwell stress approach, and these are found to be equivalent. The relationship between di erent `action at a distance' theories is discussed. The role of relativ...
